Elias Bendix adresses burnout on new single, “Did My Light Go Out?”

Studies show that musicians are up to three times more likely to experience mental health issues than other professional groups. Things like stress, anxiety, anxiety, depression and low self-confidence, as well as frustration over lack of recognition are challenges that many musicians struggle with. Danish musician Elias Bendix knows first-hand the burnout that often accompanies these challenges.

On the new single ‘Did My Light Go Out?’ he puts into words the difficult emotions that can be associated with feeling burnt out in the profession that has been the center of his life.

“My new single is about losing faith in myself. It describes a hopelessness that I think many emerging musicians can recognize”, says Elias Bendix.

Ethiopia offered a new perspective

Earlier in 2023, Elias Bendix uprooted his Copenhagen life and moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to start a new chapter with his family. Here, he has found that the harsh conditions of the country’s population have shifted his perspective:

“There is extreme poverty in the country, and basic human rights are not exactly a given”, he explains and continues:

“Before we left, I felt like I had lost motivation for everything. I had doubts about where I was going. But the contrast between the safety of Denmark and Ethiopia has given me a new outlook that puts my musical dreams into perspective. We are so privileged in Denmark, and maybe that’s why the recognition from the industry is not so important to me anymore. Success can be measured on many different levels, and that has been an important realization for me.”

In a tasteful soundscape characterized by melodic bass lines and horns, Elias competently frolics in this melancholic song.
