January 12, 2024 — Today, rising pop-country artist Ashley Kutcher returns with reflective new single “Girl in the Mirror,” via Darkroom Records. Listen HERE. The relatable track, which finds the singer-songwriter detailing the contentious and often difficult relationship with oneself, is the latest single off of her upcoming debut album House on the Water, which releases January 26.
“Last night things got heated up again, big fight — she got in my head,” Kutcher sings over beautiful acoustic strumming. “Gaslight, can’t forget the words she said.” However, as the chorus crescendos, there’s a twist: “I swear I’d leave her, but she’s the girl in the mirror.” Unique and engrossing, the vulnerable track attempts to reconcile an internal conflict that so many face.
“Boundaries are essential in healthy relationships, but it’s impossible to ever disconnect from your own mind,” Kutcher says. “‘Girl in the Mirror’ is a song about how hard it is to free yourself from conflict in your own head. It’s a song about wanting to leave a relationship with yourself.” It’s the kind of emotional insight that makes the newcomer’s upcoming debut album, House on the Water, one of the year’s most anticipated. On the meaning of the album title, Kutcher says, “growing up in a house on the water in Maryland has always been a part of who I am. By the water is where we listen to music, swim, play games, and really just connect as people. I always knew in my older years that I wanted to end up with the love of my life in a little house on the bay just like my parents did.”
“Girl in the Mirror” arrives just months after her piano-driven track “Trustfall.” That was preceded by emotive record “Favorite Color,” as well as “Matchbox,” “Boy From Carolina,” “Everyone and No One,” and thebittersweet “I Can’t Swim.” Now, with “Girl in the Mirror,” Kutcher sets the scene for the release of her debut album, showcasing her brand of melodic, brutally honest pop.
