JANUARY 18TH, 2024 – NEW YORK, NY – British superstar Sophie Ellis-Bextor has found global chart success as one of her most loved and successful songs “Murder on the Dancefloor” has become a worldwide viral hit. It charted at #2 on the Official UK Singles Chart this past week, matching the chart position it achieved 22 years ago. It also hit a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, rocketing up 40 spots on the chart from #98 to #58—marking Sophie’s first song to chart on the Hot 100 in her career.
After featuring in the epic final scene of Emerald Fennell’s recently released and much talked about film Saltburn, Sophie’s popular 2001 hit “Murder on the Dancefloor” has seen a huge resurgence. Old and new fans are streaming the track, and the song is being used as a trending audio for millions of videos on both Instagram and TikTok. Globally, “Murder on the Dancefloor” continues to mark new achievements, including over 300 million total global streams, 40 million global Spotify streams in the past 30 days with a daily streaming peak of 2.92 million, and 3.6 billion TikTok views with over 1.1 million TikTok total creations using the song. In the US, the song peaked at #1 on the Spotify Viral 100 Chart and climbed to Top 40 on the US Spotify Top 200. It also hit #1 on the iTunes Dance Chart, Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart, and Top 10 on the US Shazam Chart. Internationally, the track is #2 on the UK Spotify Chart and #16 on the Global Spotify Top 200, #1 on the UK TikTok Chart, #3 on YouTube Music Video Chart, Top 5 on the Global Shazam Chart, and is poised to enter the Top 10 on the UK Radio Airplay Chart this week.
“Murder on the Dancefloor” became a Top 10 hit worldwide on release 22 years ago, charting at #2 in the UK and within the Top 3 in Australia, New Zealand, and four European countries. The iconic music video, which is now available in 4K for the first time, sees a cunning Sophie compete in a dance competition and deceptively get rid of her fellow contestants. The video was filmed by Sophie Muller and was one of their first videos together, beginning a long working relationship that still continues today.
Sophie recently announced she will be releasing “Murder on the Dancefloor” on 7” vinyl for the first time as a limited edition red 7”, and will also release a limited-edition red CD single. Both are available to pre-order here and will be released on February 16th through Polydor/Casablanca.
Last week, Sophie also shared a 7-track Murder on the Dancefloor EP, featuring “Murder on the Dancefloor” alongside the original B-Side “Never Let Me Down,” the Extended Album Version, and remixes from Jewels & Stone, Danny D, Hq and Twin Murder. All tracks were originally released in 2001, but the majority are brand new to streaming services.
