STREAM ‘WALKIN”
STREAM IN WAVES
In Waves can only be described as a six-track shot of dopamine spilling over with irresistibly catchy melodies, exhilarating vocals, and joyous indie-rock instrumentation. Taking inspiration from a wide range of influences (from Elvis to The Strokes, Paul Simon to The Pixies), The Bankes Brothers come together in a way that defies sonic parallels yet remains welcomingly familiar, committed to creating fresh, exciting, and uniquely vibrant music. Whether it’s the title track’s thirst to be belted out of a car stereo on a road trip or the sentimental EP-closer ‘See Me Run’, the honest simplicity of [Morgan] Bankes’ lyrics leaves space for the energetic melodies, current of sleepy vocals and sedated guitar tones to pick one up and sweep them away, again, and again, and again. Reminiscent of the youthful high of a late-night romance and the euphoric stagger home the following day.
“Getting this EP together has been a long process,” Morgan and Nelson Bankes stated, “after multiple attempts and a long journey, we are finally there. It feels so validating and something we know we can build on. Honestly, the most exciting part of this release for us – this moment in time – is seeing people relating to the music and starting to identify with different songs that have come out of this. Our biggest focus now is looking forward – there is so much more coming, and we are stoked for old fans and new to hear it.”
For a fitting reflection of a band that is about to hit its stride, look no further than ‘Walkin’’. “We wanted to save the best for the last; ‘ Walkin’’ was a songwriting saga for us since day one,” the brothers added. Working from the ground up, this rollicking indie epic metamorphosed from a mere hook to a melody to being arguably the quartet’s favourite song on the EP. The essence of saving the best till last could be said for any of the five singles they have released over the past year; however, ‘Walkin’’ is a mantra-defining track for The Bankes Brothers. A real guiding force as they decided to take a different musical path in late 2022 and plunged head first into their writing and performing: “The track is all about doing your own thing – gut-checking, you know? ”
On a quest to light up the indie rock scene and ignite audiences everywhere, the Victoria, BC four-piece – brothers Nelson and Morgan Bankes on vocals and guitar (respectively), lead guitarist Carson Cleaver, and drummer Gray Oxley – formed in a pool hall one Friday night in 2017. Within a week, they played their first gig, leaving the former high school classmates overwhelmed by their undeniable musical chemistry. As The Bankes Brothers continued to hone their sound, playing every gig available, the pandemic halted all progress, leaving the quartet to pick things up when the world reopened with a refined sense of direction and purpose. What followed was a flurry of unique, free-wheeling, late 00s-indie rock meets belting blues-rock tracks that have been delicately pieced together to create In Waves.
