Gustaf has released a new, Beck directed video for “Close,” a sophisticated snapshot of the paranoia and urgency that the Brooklyn no wave / post-punk band exudes. “One of the unexpected gifts that came out of the formation of this band is our friendship with Beck” notes Gustaf. “He was one of our early champions before we even really knew what we were doing. That early encouragement helped cement us on a path and ease into a greater sense of confidence as we moved the project forward. It has been such a joy knowing him since our first meeting and an even greater thrill to have been able to work with him on this video and get a closer look at his creative process. He brings such a wealth of knowledge and dedication to everything he does and this video is a reflection of his vision.“
This Friday, April 5th, Gustaf will release their sophomore album Package Part 2 their first project since 2021’s Audio Drag for Ego Slobs, which confronted the struggle to deal with the narrator’s surroundings, finding ways to behave in a way where their emotions and actions didn’t alienate most everyone. With Package Pt. 2 however, the narrator becomes self-aware, wondering what they might change to make life, relationships, and love a little more manageable presented via a dizzying post-punk dream brought with a full command of the lineage that radiates from obvious touchstones like the B-52s and Talking Heads to DNA and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. The album was produced by Erin Tonkon, who worked on David Bowie’s Blackstar, the album was recorded at Studio G Brooklyn and Circular Ruin.
The band, who just wrapped up a U.K. tour with Yard Act will quickly get back on the road later this month to support the album with a North American Tour. Kicking of April 21st in Boston, the 23-date tour will hit Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, DC, a Kirby Block Party appearance and many more before concluding with a hometown show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (full dates below). Tickets are on sale now.
