For many years, Siri Neel has felt trapped in a maze, where the path to believing in herself has been anything but straightforward. I’m a Maze is about finally finding the way to embrace all of her sides – the strong and the quirky. I’ll never let you go’ she sings of her vulnerability and sensitive spirit.
When she quit her day job just over a year ago to pursue a career as an artist and songwriter, she realised that vulnerability was a superpower in songwriting.
On 6th September Siri Neel will release ‘I’m a Maze’, the fourth and final single before her long-awaited debut album. According to Siri Neel, the common denominator of the upcoming album is liberation, which the theme of ‘I’m a Maze’ is a good example of.
Vulnerability makes you strong
All my life I’ve struggled to accept my vulnerability and sensitivity, which I thought were signs of weakness. I was afraid that people would judge me because I cry so easily,’ says Siri Neel, who has had six songs on Denmark’s biggest radio station, P4.
“I now realise that my vulnerability is a huge superpower. As an artist, having easy access to my emotions is something I use in my songwriting and the way I express my songs. It’s just a huge source of inspiration, which hopefully means that my songs can be appreciated.”
“I used to be a master at talking myself down – probably as a defence mechanism,” she explains. ‘I’m a Maze’ has helped her find her authentic self and stand behind all her quirky sides 100%.
International sounding
Siri Neel’s voice has often been compared to Kate Bush by radio presenters and music media both in Denmark and abroad – and when you add a little Swedish producer magic, you get a modern pop song with a delicious sound rarely found on the Danish music scene.
The result is a dynamic pop song with pulsating acoustic guitars, ethereal backing vocals and electronic production that moves from quiet and vulnerable in the verse, to strong and powerful in the chorus, to a climax in the C section.
Produced by Ludvig Algovik (Victor Brodin, Besides The Bridge), co-written by Jade Ell (Olivia Lobato) and Pilvi Kekkonen and mixed by Jakob Groth (Alphabeat, Nik & Jay etc.), Siri Neel continues her impressive career which has already earned her a lot of airplay and a nomination for DUP’s Artist of the Year.
Siri Neel’s debut album ‘Drawn Like a Magnet’ will be released on 25 October. On 1st November she will play her first headlining gig at RUST in Copenhagen before heading to London where she is booked for a couple of showcases.
