Hopefully these bands have day jobs… by Mark Erickson

Herein lies a dutiful review of releases by NERVED and also Gale Forces:

Today, September 27, NERVED has released a single called “Don’t Lie.”  While I always welcome a powerful female voice to the metal community, vocalist Petra Kvanna and Sweden-based NERVED reveal nothing as a group that necessitates an invitation to my dream US festival featuring all-Scandinavian groups.  The chorus within “Don’t Lie” consists of two words, i.e., don’t lie.  The two words are repeated 19 times and twice the chorus repeats without an intervening verse.  Likewise, the drumming is stunningly repetitious.  No fills or temp changes.  I listened to a second track, “Scars.”  The music did not produce a single nod of the head.  Thus, no mas.

In its press release for “Last Man Under the Moon,” California-based Gale Forces name-dropped Iggy Pop and Black Sabbath.  One (of seven) You Tube comment said the music sounded “like Helmet and The (sic) Deftones on Ludes.”  Given this one song, I would not see this band for free.  However, I listened to a second tune, “Highlights of Existence.”  This song has been on YT for 10 months, and has yet to elicit a single comment.  I remained completely unimpressed by Gale Forces.
