November 27, 2024 — As The Grascals continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary following the release of their album, 20, the band has released a music video for their new radio single that paints a lifelike picture of a coal miner’s family.
“‘Coal Dust Kisses’ is a true story written about my wife’s (Susanne Mumpower) papaw who worked in the Southwest Virginia coal mines and would come to her house during his lunch break and would always leave the coal soot on her cheek from his kisses,” says Grascals’ vocalist and guitarist Jamie Johnson.
From the start, the song’s lyrics tell a vivid story:
Covered up from head to foot
From all the dust and soot
That’s how he came home after working every day
…
But every night before he fell asleep,
He never failed to leave
Coal dust kisses on my cheek
Johnson continues, “The song was written nearly twenty years ago by Susanne and Jerry Salley, and it just seemed like the perfect fit to include on The Grascals’ 20 album. ‘Coal Dust Kisses’ is dedicated to all of the coal miners and their families.”
