Buena Madera’s ‘Core,’ A Review of Greatness, by Mark Erickson

Rock band Buena Madera hails from Italy.  The only two rock bands from Italy to which I have listened include Goblin and Maneskin.  The former is a prog-rock band from the 1970s. I have seen Maneskin live two times-both high-quality shows-and have previously written about the group here:

and here:

The press release from Buena Madera begins with, “We’re Buena Madera, a stoner alternative-metal band from Padua, Italy, and we’re excited to announce our new album Core, set for release on December 6, 2024.  Core is a 10-track journey through themes like frustration, insecurity, and alienation, embracing a raw sound that’s true to our live performances and self-produced with an early ’90s vibe.”  My first reaction?  1990s+Core=sensational debut album by Stone Temple Pilots.

I went to SoundCloud where I saw tags #stoner, #alternative, #metal, #prog, and #noise.  I listened to the first five tunes.  My initial reaction heard nothing proggy or stoner or noise, and too-prominent vocals.  I took a day off before another listen to form an opinion.

Core solidly rocks!  Its tracks are not repetitive or formulaic and the drummer displays skills well beyond a simple 4/4 timekeeper.  Buena Madera should not attempt to pigeonhole itself into any genre; instead, apply your rock sensibilities to create good music.  Buena Madera clearly has the talent to forge an upward trajectory.  Bring more music to the masses.  This would include either a headline tour at small venues or a tour with fellow Italian rockers Goblin and Maneskin.  I would definitely pay to see Buena Madera in either setting.  Best wishes, Buena Madera!  Hope to see you soon and ciao ciao for now!!

Buena Madera is a power trio that produces a sonic energy that belies three people.  Their sound reminds me of another power trio-especially their rockin’ tune, Walk Away:

James Gang – Walk Away (1971)  I do not make this comparison lightly as the YT clip contains some of the best rock propulsion I have seen.  Buena Madera formed in 2017 and, according to their website, About us – Buena Madera, their musical journey has been attracting more fans.  The release of Core should definitely garner additional, excellent feedback!
