Twin Cities’ astral jazzman Cody Steinmann transcends all ‘Confined Spaces’

Cody Steinman is a great Minneapolitan and a great musician. Please listen to this album. It is the very kewlest of the kewl.

Confined Spaces is the second full length album from Cody Steinmann and the first full length album from Cody’s current working trio where he plays with Chris Bates on Bass and Abinnet Berhanu on drums.

The music was written, rehearsed, performed and recorded during the COVID19 lockdown and the uncertain times which followed. It’s a reflection on isolation and the confined spaces we’ve found ourselves in as a society and how music allows us to triumph over everything.

The album is also about personal and spiritual growth in times of great hardship and weak thoughts.

The first track “Abide With Me” is
1) a post-information age vamp on the chords of the ancient hymn of the same name,
2) an homage to Thelonious Monk, and
3) a plea for the listeners’ full attention.

The title track “Confined Spaces” takes you on a journey from the tension of external separation to the internal spiritual release of wholeness.

“Red River Valley” is just what you think it is: a wild, Steinman-esque reinterpretation of the old west folk song. This album’s greatness knows no boundaries. Don’t fence it in. And don’t try to quarantine it. Just listen and feel the love.
