On the evening of March 7 I ventured to downtown Seattle to Madam Lou’s. Boston ska band Big D & the Kid’s Table were playing. I arrived just after they hit the stage. Their charismatic singer, David McWade now has grey replacing his blond hair, but his boyish charm and energy were fully present.
I have seen Big D many times since I first saw them perform at Warped Tour in 2004. As I recall, they were the only ska band on the bill that year. They were unknown to me then and being a big ska fan, I checked the out. I’ve been a hard core fan ever since.
I thought I’d be able to see Big D unscathed but when they lit into their more raucous songs like Little Bitch & Noise Complaint I had to brace myself so I didn’t get bounced into the stage.
This Boston based six piece still packs a crowd and a lot of energy. Guitarist Alex Stern churned out some fabulous licks while sax players Ryan O’Connor & Matt Appleton provided the ska sound. Bassist Ben Basile & drummer Alex Brander rounded out the power.
They left the stage and chants for Big D Big D ensued until they returned for an extended version of Half Way Home which had everyone singing along.
As many times as I’ve seen Big D & the Kid’s Table, I will keep seeing them every time they come around. This was a fun night that didn’t last nearly long enough.
