Hiding Places formed in the countryside of Athens, Georgia in 2020, but their roots trace back to a shared college radio station at UNC Chapel Hill. Guitarist/vocalists Audrey Keelin and Nicholas Byrne, bassist Michael Matsakis, and drummer Henry Cutting create a twinkly and raw folk-alternative collaboration that blends earnest storytelling with intricate, guitar-driven textures.
Now based in Brooklyn’s DIY scene, Hiding Places has carved out a space with their gentle, evocative vocals and lush, emotionally layered melodies. The band self-booked a tour through the South to SXSW, where they debuted their latest record—an intimate and gritty reflection of their years of movement, growth, and collaboration.
In March 2024, the band released their latest EP Lesson, produced by Colin Miller (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), and recorded at Angel Studios in London. Lesson was released on March 22nd through independent Brooklyn-based label HATETOQUIT.
Today, Hiding Places announces the joint release of Split x3, a collection of six singles shared with Asheville bands, Trust Blinks and Tombstone Poetry. The band’s contributions, “Unfixing” and “Flooded Island,” continue their exploration of vulnerability, dislocation, and sonic introspection.
“Flooded Island,” is a lo-fi, hypnotic meditation on standing at the edge of change.
Audrey Keelin shares, “In an attempt to prepare for my early 2024 move to New York, I wrote a song meditating on the image of a flooded island. Working minimal hours in a university woodshop in North Carolina, making just enough money to sustain myself, but feeling fulfilled by my community in a way I never had, the prospect of moving to New York overwhelmed me. This song took shape as a piece of advice to myself: to let go and practice presence in whatever lies ahead.”
“Unfixing,” is a cathartic and poignant reflection on the end of a friendship.
Nicholas Byrne explains, “Audrey told me on the phone as they were exiting a train in Manhattan that this is a song about fear. You can hear a chilling anxiety in the first half of the song, but there is a moment of change where everything is warm again. ‘It makes sense, I don’t want to make sense,’ is the refrain that reminds the secure self of how we felt before we realized everything would be okay.“
Hiding Places creates a safe and inviting sonic landscape—an open space where vulnerability is honored, and a palpable energy flows between stage and listener. In their live performances, presence becomes communion.
