Raphael Saadiq – Good Man – Live on KEXP

To my ears this sounds like a soul ballad delivery and structure with bluesy guitar licks. So it doesn’t strike me as especially modern: You could well have heard something like this in the late sixties while driving in your car on a muggy summer’s night. Atmospheric and charming, but will it sound as good the tenth time as it does the first?

Musicians, thank goodness, are always picking up ideas and forms from the past in order to come up with something “original”. And not just musicians; it’s as true of William Shakespeare as it is of Robert Johnson– tomorrow’s 100th birthday boy. (Robert Leroy Johnson: May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938.)
