My wild New Years weekend began Friday night New Year’s Eve Eve at Barboza Lounge where three Seattle ska bands were playing. Headlining was a band I saw for the first time called Gully.
Fronted by vocalist Josh who had thick dark curls cascading past his shoulders that kept falling in front of his face. He oozed charm and cute. The band was fairly laid back at first until they brought up some members of It Gets Worse (who played just prior). Then the stage ignited with a surge of spunky energy. Musically they were a bit of everything. I heard elements of pop and elements of ska. For the finale they brought up Erika Czach who matched Josh’s charisma molecule to molecule. She could belt out tunes and she could croon.
When they left the stage all I wanted was more. I have a hunch I’ll be seeing Gully around a lot more so I guess I have something to look forward to.
Besides Josh, Gully is, Anthony – electric, Greg – bass, (who looks like a young George Lucas) and Kylie – drums.
As previously stated, It Gets Worse played just prior to Gully. It Gets Worse doesn’t come close to getting worse. They just keep getting better. They’ve really developed as a band and have honed their stage act. This time they’ve added another singer, Chelsea Crispin and could she sing! When she wasn’t singing she was dancing about the stage. This band really pumps up the onstage antics, yet it never detracts from the superb musicianship. Bass player James Sweazea now had hair to his shoulders that whipped about as he flitted manically about the stage.
Not to be outdone, three-fifths of the horn section leaped off the stage, danced in a circle pit with the audience and stood on tables, never missing a beat. That’s just a small description of what it’s like to see It Gets Worse play live. One never knows what to expect and that’s just one of the elements that make them one of the most fun bands to watch. The remainder of It Gets Worse is, JR Sorrells- Drums, Eric Stallard- Lead Guitar, Andrew Adams- Trombone, Frank Smith- Tenor Saxophone, Peter Fink – Trombone, Michael Turner Anderson (MTA)- Baritone Saxophone, and Sam Trowbridge- Trumpet.
Opening the night was Echo Shot. This is my second time seeing this trio. The first time was when they opened for the Toasters, but it had been awhile. Echo Shot played a steady, rhythmic ska/ reggae very reminiscent of Sublime. They even played a Sublime song (Don’t Push), which they definitely did justice too. Echo Shot is, David Chisa- guitar, vocals, Luke Smith- drums, Mitch French- bass, vocals. They are definitely a band to look out for.
Not only was this night a night of fine ska bands, it was also the start of a wild New Year’s weekend.
