When The Lights Went Out at Light of the Cross, by Davin Michael Stedman

☆ Last week the church I grew up in shut down forever because not enough people go anymore. There were no more kids, they couldn’t cover the mortgage. They did vote to welcome gays and allow Women to be Pastors, so they did go out with class man. Lord knows they tried.

☆ I sang Amazing Grace with Peace Phan on keys during the final offering.

☆This here is the poor man’s hologram of me projected inside the building within the nature around it. It’s an optical trick my Pops explained to me when he took us to the Haunted House at Disneyland. It’s how the ghosts appeared to be sitting next to you in the mirror. For many the Church is simply the World. But with the ice caps melting and storms logically increasing in strength (because Science), we’re being evicted there as well, because we refuse to pay the mortgage and clean up our mess.

…or even care much for each other.

☆ Humanity is the meth head family next door with the station wagon up on blocks. We aren’t that classy. But the end at Light of The Cross was a lesson in how keep your head up and celebrate on a sad solemn day. They had a good run. I was there near the very beginning. I said goodbye at the end.

☆ Being a Lutheran taught me it was A OK to be a political moderate, and that some of the biggest rebels are in the middle. Just good luck converting anyone with out scape goats and fanaticism. Martin Luther’s anti-Semitism is his black eye, but what is frightening is the idea that he may have only been moderately anti-Semitic at the time of Pograms and good ol family friendly village wide Witch burnings.

…but I digress…

☆ Time will bury us all. Time goes on, with little concern for the Life around it. Whether we invented God, or by the patient trick of evolution God molded us, we have had our Gods handy as a means to understand this. Or at least we did. We say with our feet that we don’t need them anymore. We have our vaccines and our glistening supermarkets of pesticide apples…for now.

John Lennon opened the song ‘God’ with this startling observation, that still haunts me,

“God is a concept by which we measure our own pain…I’ll say it again. God is a concept by which we measure our own pain.”

Davin’s new song has been released and has become a global earworm and Caribbean dancehall hit. Listen here on Reggaeville: DAVIN MICHAEL STEDMAN & ANTHONY RED ROSE – FREE YOUR MIND FEAT. SLY & ROBBIE WITH LENKY MARSDEN. The video is now available on Youtube.
