My West Indian Roots: Thank You Mr. Rosario, by Davin Michael Stedman

Well this is quite epic for me. This my dear grandmother Audi with her beloved Grandfather that raised her. She tears up every time she talks about this wonderful man.

This is man is my strongest link to Africa, Jose Rosario.

There is legend of his father being referred to as “The Frenchman,” which is a clue to the diaspora of the Haitian Revolution that left a real mark on Creole culture of New Orleans.

I was stressing today about this whole trip back to Kingston, but this is a gift.

This man like my White Father I love, was a Patriarch. But Rosario came from the 19th century, and the end of slavery in the Americas. When my abuela cries tears of absolute love for her abuelo, I am reminded that Slavery was not so long ago and dignity and decency can last for centuries.

This man managed a cigar factory in Puerto Rico. Years after this photo he traveled to NYC to see his granddaughter graduate from nursing school.

Hello Mr. Rosario. I needed to see you today. And I need that suit.
