Throughout his life, Kahnin has been writing music as an escape from the lobster traps of everyday life. After spending 7 years as a Deadliest Catch-style commercial fisherman in Iceland and Alaska, he now keeps the family’s extreme fishing company afloat, a job that demands long and lonely days out in the frigid open sea but provides him with inspiration and ideas for his songs.
Life is exhilarating and heartbreaking in the tempest-tossed North Atlantic but is always filled with a shimmer of hope. Hope in plumbing the depths of love. Hope in finding a lifetime of friendship, dropping your anchor, and caring for your partner forever. These are the core themes in Kahnin’s lyrics. Based out of Keflavik, Iceland– which he lovingly refers to as “Polar Nashville”– singer-songwriter Gudmundur Jens Gudmundsson, aka Kahnin, casts a wide net when writing his songs. Some will contain a swell of tumultuous strength, some will cause you to shed a briny tear, others have waves of unapologetic wisdom about life, and still others will be sung with a windswept longing in his voice that is mystifying to the land-bound listener.
Married, he is bringing up two very lovely girls (Both of them have hair of gold, like their mother.). In 2017, a friend of his recommended that Kahnin somehow form an album from all the songs he’s birthed while out at sea. The outcome is a 5-song “Family,” or EP, recorded in the summer of 2018 by Arthur Pingrey, along with Leah Siegel (vocals) and Eric Doob (drums) in hot and sweaty Brooklyn, NYC, with “Wonderland” as the first, and most spectacular, single released.
