ATUSJI is the solo-project of Terkel Atsushi Røjle (Girls’ Night Out, Virgin Suicide). He writes, performs and produces everything himself. His experiences both personal and professional are clearly reflected in the music – a warped and fresh take on the singer/songwriter-tradition, made modern in its fusion of Soundcloud-rap and music from the alternative hitlists of the early 00’s, when ATUSJI was at the start of his teens. Thematically, the songs are equal parts group therapy and diary.
On the production side, ATUSJI experiments with form. Taking a cue from hip-hop mixtapes, short and long tracks with varied soundscapes are put side-by-side. Synth stabs and pianos are re-amped and distorted; vocals stretched and pitched; guitars and voice taking turns to be right in the room with the listener or peeking over the horizon. The result is a wild blend of lo-fi and hi-fi. All of this is set to lyrics that feel like part diary, part group therapy, taking its aesthetic cues from solo artists from Elliott Smith to Joji.
