Take a listen to “Dead Weight”, the mega-real electro-pop single from LA-based singer-songwriter Reina Mora which chronicles the rising up that’s only possible when you remove toxic people from your life.
“The song was inspired by people I have had to let go in order to grow and move forward”, says Reina. “Not stating names, but the message from the song is powerful and uplifting all at once. Sometimes the only way to move forward is to get rid of the “Dead Weight” that is holding you back.”
Her favorite lyrics from this anthemic melody sum it all up perfectly “I’m breaking free- I win all by myself – Cause I buried you”. Catchy and cathartic, “Dead Weight” will resonate with most of the population, since everyone’s been there. Some of us are still there.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Mora is currently making her mark on Los Angeles. First and foremost, she is a survivor and that informs her songwriting. Poetic and meaningful, Reina’s sharp and real lyrics come from the tough lessons she learned during her time as a homeless teen in the City of Angels and her emotional struggles with her estranged family.
A songwriter since the age of 8, Mora is deeply committed to turning this world around and making it a better place. She volunteers for UNICEF to serve the less fortunate, for Puerto Ricans in Action to raise both money and awareness for the struggles happening in her native home, Puerto Rico, and for You Matter, a suicide prevention organization that supports both teens and our vets. She is also proud to be a part of SONA where she is fighting to help songwriters rights as a steering committee member. She is unapologetic about her politics, her sexuality, and her support for the rights of women and the LGBTQ community, both here in America and around the world. She is using her voice to touch and inspire people, to open minds and hearts, and to entertain people while doing it. Her drive to persist against all odds is what sets her apart and drives her to keep writing.
