Diving deep into the realities of self-image and summertime struggles, Maisyn’s single, “Pool Party ” is a vulnerable expression of oneself.
“I gave myself permission to reach for the darkest places, and I wound up with a song about the subtle invasiveness and shame of body dysmorphia. Once I started actually speaking to my experience the song took shape effortlessly.” – Maisyn on “Pool Party”
Like a beautiful coming-of-age film, Maisyn’s music is relatable to many while remaining uniquely her own. After DIY touring across the East Coast and playing venues that her idols had prior, Masiyn, also known as Jessi Mason, has taken the time to tap into what makes her tick and the result is a body of work that puts words to the true grittiness of womanhood. The lyrics to “Pool Party” are unlike anything Maisyn has written before, detailing her struggles with self-image and body dysmorphia. Just in time for summer, the “Pool Party” unpacks a personal narrative that so many can understand, laying it all out on the table rather than continuing to cover up.
As the third single off of her upcoming EP, “Pool Party” only extends Maisyn’s goal to create a project that peaks into different insecurities that one person can feel. Maisyn couldn’t find the right words to write about body image for fear of the end result sounding more like “a tampon commercial” than a work of art. That said, “Pool Party” instantly became a cathartic offering evocative of the desire to find summer days joyous and celebratory instead of an unleashing of one’s deepest fears. Working with Grammy-nominated engineer/producer Joey Messina-Doerning (HAIM, Women in Music Pt. III), Maisyn is finally at a place of deep pride as an artist. Where her music used to fall into the category of “let’s talk about relationships,” songs like “Pool Party ” and her previous single “Cool Girl” speak more to the gravity of one’s relationship with themselves.
