The Lady Takes Charge: Cindy Latin’s Big Band Orchestrates Big Dreams and Complex Emotions

There’s no one out there right now who can write and record intense, classy songs resounding with the ache of difficult but necessary human relational decisions better than Cindy Latin. Just take a listen to “What Do I Do,” one of her powerful songs from last November, on which her voice, hurt but unbroken, sails over a gently weeping jazz guitar and voices a protagonist who can only begin to deal with a separation that’s gonna hurt for a long time.

And now, take a listen to her new song below, “I Don’t Know What’s Worse” where Ms. Latin is Singer/Songwriter/Arranger/Producer. She’s not just the Duke on this one. Here she’s Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and Billie Holliday and she does all of those jobs expertly. Just watch the video to see how nicely the arrangement and orchestration work together. As far as human drama, this song has it too. The songstress must decide which is worse, (with that person or without that person) something everyone encounters eventually, and the pain of that unavoidable human decision is felt and heard throughout the song.
