Move over, Beatles. There are new mop tops in town and they’re just as cute and just as poppy. But the similarities end there. Sitting On Stacy is a pop punk band from San Diego and they headlined at one of the new Crocodile clubs called Madame Lou’s.
Sitting On Stacy is a young band (They barely looked 20) but by the sounds of them they must have started playing when they were still in diapers. They burst on stage all energy and bounce. Hoyt Yeatman (lead vocals/guitar)and Kyle Hart (bass/vocals) both oozed charisma from every pore while and Trevor Smith (drums) slammed away, his long hair often falling in front of his face.
Musically I heard elements of Blink 182 and maybe a little Jimmy Eat World, but Sitting On Stacy definitely has their own sound. The band performed their own songs which were catchy pop tunes with a raunchy punk edge, but they also did a medley of Paranoid (which totally rivaled the Dickies’ version as well as the Sabbath original) followed by Ace of Spades and the Boys Are Back In Town. For the finale Hoyt Yeatman jumped into the very enthusiastic audience and danced about never missing a lick on his guitar. He then leaped back on stage, stood on the drum riser then leaped off where he and Kyle Hart fell onto the stage together. Both of them were full of kicks and jumps throughout the show with their mops of hair flailing about.
Sitting On Stacy has only been around since 2017 and I have a feeling they won’t be playing clubs much longer. They’re headed for bigger venues.
Preceding Sitting On Stacy was a Portland trio called Novacane consisting of Dylan Latimer (Guitarist/Vocalist), Oliver Lester (Bassist) and Zach Clifton (Drummer). These guys burst onto stage like a sudden fireworks display. Bassist Oliver Lester sported a Tommy Ramone hair style and was all bounces and twists, rarely staying in one place for more than a few seconds. Dylan Latimer dripped with charm as he belted out the band’s songs which contained elements of pop, punk and a bit of psychedelic. They were a pleasure to watch.
Opening the evening was Golden Boy. These guys also hail from Portland. These guys were pretty laid back and melodic but they also oozed charm. Golden Boy is a band of stellar musicianship but also made it obvious they enjoyed being on stage and playing to an audience. They were the perfect band to warm up the evening.
I came out that evening to see the Aquadolls and even though they were on the bill they weren’t there. Sitting On Stacy were the headliners and everyone in the club cleared out when their set was over. I emailed the club asking what happened but they never responded. All was not lost. I got to see three great bands I was unfamiliar with.
