During the Fourth of July weekend violence, 71 people were shot and 8 killed in Chicago, Illinois. Those combined numbers easily exceeded the horrific and tragic shooting that happened in Highland Park, Illinois. While all major local networks fixated on Highland Park for several days, national outlets also devoted considerable resources to the suburban massacre. And it seemed like over 100 officers descended on Highland Park with news cameras close behind.
A GoFundMe page is close to reaching $3.3 million in donations for a two year old boy who tragically lost both of his parents during the Independence Day parade mass shooting that took place in Highland Park two weeks ago. Two other funds, organized by VictimsFirst, have raised over $500,000 for affected families. If one googles “GoFundMe Chicago:” the first 20 hits pertain to Highland Park, not Chicago.
The crickets were heard chirping for the brown-skinned victims of the “other” massacre, the one that took place on Chicago’s west and south sides. This is America, freedom for anyone as long as you have white skin, testicles, and practice heterosexuality.
