BELAGANAS are more than just music; they are a movement, the likes of which haven’t been seen in years. Based on discography alone, they have far superseded their Beastie Boys comparisons, delivering musical offerings spanning a wider variety of genres than almost any other band before them. This is incredibly apparent on “Jaywalkin,” which features a mariachi song interpolated into a sticky trap beat, with a gut-wrenching (nearly screamo) chorus over it that demands to be heard above all else.
“Jaywalkin” became available to the public July 1st, 2022 and quickly landed leading positions on editorial playlists from both Spotify and Apple Music. The accompanying video that BELAGANAS have lined up for release is, much like the song, a truly
left-of-center experience. Through the use of brightly-colored aliens, quick cuts and high energy performances, this goofy interpretation of the song adds a comical and fun experience to the single.
To truly capture the song’s high energy takes influence from videos like the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage, with elements of modern day cinematography you may find in a video by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, all mashed together with to create something that is uniquely BELAGANAS. The directorial duo, Eric Daniels and Matty Houck, from production company Customer Support, employed the use of plate shot, quick transitions and crafty editing.
Shooting the video predominantly in Tempe, Arizona, in late June with over a hundred degree weather each day of shooting (with the boys slated to wear in bright yellow jumpsuits for half of the shots) led to multiple early morning shooting days in order to try and escape the heat. Production began utilizing zero budget, which forced everyone involved to get creative with thevideo, which ultimately added to the uniqueness of the final product.
“Jaywalkin” finds BELAGANAS in their rawest form, throwing caution to the wind with both the singles and video and delivers an expression of pure energy. Don’t think about it. Just feel it. It won’t be hard after you see this video, trust me.
