Viral folk singer Willi Carlisle is playing Portland this Aug 14. It’s almost a CD release show since his album dropped July 15 on Free Dirt Records. He’s opening for American Aquarium at Hawthorne Theatre. NPR recently featured Willi’s epic video (he went hard in the paint for this video, earning himself a concussion), and said “Willi Carlisle speaks his truth, of falling down the economic ladder, to set up space for punch lines galore in the honky-tonk romp “Vanlife”:

The song’s fun, but it’s also a hard hitting satire of the kind of late capitalism Instagram lifestyle that glosses over the harder realities. Yeah, you may have a beautiful van and you may be living the vanlife, but nobody should have to be homeless in our society. That’s the kind of old school Pete Seeger protest folk singing that we all love.
