While the rest of the world is deciding whether to see Barbie or Oppenheimer on Barbenheimer release day, 07/21/23, East Portland Blog will, of course, be enjoying the delicious sights and sounds of first-generation Rochester power pop band New Math via their fresh video “Take to the Night” and the classic, long-awaited, vinyl masterpiece, Die Trying & Other Hot Sounds (1979-1983).
“Take to the Night” (seen below) is a previously unreleased demo and featured track on the album coming out 7/21. This magnificent tune was written by the band’s drummer, Roy Stein, and was recorded in 1983 at The Hit Factory. Studio personnel included Kevin Patrick (vocals), Gary Trainer (bass), Chris Yockel (guitar), Roy Stein (drums), and Mark Schwarz (keyboards).
Songwriter Stein describes the song’s origin in this way, “We had a new manager from NYC and we were definitely trying to get a little more commercial with our sound and this was my attempt at that. At the time, I had a close relationship with a wonderful and beautiful German woman named Monika. This was a love song for her. It was about love and infatuation [Ed. Note: Here’s the Barbie and Ken stuff.] surrounded by the craziness in our fast-paced life at that time. [Ed. Note: Here’s the Oppenheimer-ish stuff.] Let’s just take to the night and get the fuck out of here. It’s about escaping. Shortly after we recorded this and “Dianna,” the band went off in a different direction and those two songs were never released.”
